Maersk greens fleet via larger capacity vessels and slow sailing
Maersk Line, the largest global container carrier, has announced major cuts in greenhouse gas emissions for its container fleet.
Maersk, which started using low sulfur marine fuel before it was mandatory, is further greening its operations by buying fuel efficient ships that reportedly save 35 percent of fuel per container shipped, compared to other new ships. The Triple E vessels achieve the savings by carrying a bigger load – 9,000 FEUs – and sailing at lower speeds.
This puts the shipping giant on track to meet its CO2 reduction 2020 goals early, reducing CO2 emissions per container moved by 25 percent, compared to 2007 levels.
