CMA CGM and SAP form partnership

Global container line CMA CGM is partnering with business software provider SAP to develop the first system totally dedicated to container shipping, according to a company statement.

CMA CGM and SAP will co-design a new application with original, global functions meant to improve CMA CGM's operational performance. The solution's deployment process will begin at the end of 2015 and is expected to take two years.

The statement said the software would manage commercial processes independently, automate management procedures, and handle the 10.6 million containers transported every year by the CMA CGM, the third largest container line in the world.

"This (system) further strengthens our presence in this industry, enabling SAP to offer a complete and fully optimized solution for processes at the heart of the container shipping industry," adds Franck Cohen, president of SAP Europe, Middle East and Africa.

CMA CGM said the project will cover all 3,360,000 annual bookings generated by the container carrier, including every step in the end-to-end management of freight, from the yards, ports and on board vessels, to transport, transhipment and discharge.

"Over recent years, the group has established its own global network of agencies and a highly efficient fleet," said Rodolphe Saadé, executive officer of the CMA CGM Group. "To continue our development, we have chosen the best solution for our business. Alongside SAP, we will customize this platform to leverage performance both for the group and for our clients."
