Jebel Ali port in Dubai adopts new tech to drive growth

The primary United Arab Emirates' container port in Dubai, Jebel Ali, announced it would adopt advanced technology to drive growth at their new mega container terminal. The improvements are part of a plan to expand container handling at the port to 19 million TEUs by 2014.

Port operator DP World has hired CyberLogitec, a maritime and logistics IT company, to provide its OPUS Terminal Operating System (TOS) for Terminal 3.

When finished, the terminal will add another 4 million TEUs of capacity to Jebel Ali, the operator said in a statement.

"The innovative technology we have in place in Jebel Ali Port is designed to ease congestion across the port area, from the berths to the gates," said Mohammed Al Muallem, senior vice president and managing director of DP World, UAE Region.

Container Terminal 3, with a quay length of 1,860 meters, a draft of 17 meters, and a 70-hectare storage yard, will be equipped with 19 ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes and 50 rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes, the company said.
