Government to construct $6B Paris ship canal
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls announced Friday government plans to construct the $6 billion Seine-Nord Canal, which will connect Greater Paris to the major ports of northern Europe.
Valls says both France and the EU will finance the canal project, with construction scheduled to begin in 2017. The 106-kilometer water route, to be completed by 2023, will facilitate the flow of barge traffice between Paris and the Rouen and Le Havre seaports, the Scheldt, and beyond to the 20,000-kilometer river network of Northern Europe.
Brussels has pledged to fund up to 40 percent of the work assessed by Manuel Valls to cost between 5.7 and 6 billion dollars. The project has been deemed necessary for decades by area stakeholders, especially those in the Nord/Pas-de -Calais and Picardy regions.
Local leaders say the canal would allow navigation of barges of up to 4,400 tons and 185-meters-long, and could spur the creation of thousands of jobs.
