Maersk to conduct sea trials on low-cost fuel alternative

Danish shipping giant, A.P. Moller-Maersk, has contracted with Quadrise Fuels International Plc to conduct sea trials of a so-called low-cost alternative to heavy fuel oil used in the shipping industry, according to a statement released by the fuel company.

The sea trial is to include the installation of a 200,000 barrel-per-day manufacturing unit at the Orlen Lietuva refinery in Mazeikiai Lithuania that will produce the initial volume of Quadrise’ MSAR fuel that will end up being utilized on Maersk’s test vessel.

Quadrise said it anticipates commercial quantities of its Marine MSAR fuel would be produced during 2012 “to allow the wider evaluation of performance across a representative range of vessels.”
