Port of Savannah truckers stage protest

Dozens of short haul truck drivers picketed outside the gates of Garden City Terminal at the Port of Savannah Monday morning, alleging unfair treatment by their employers.

"We are out here today to bring attention to the fact that we are being misclassified by our employers," said Carol Cauley, spokeswoman for the truckers, alluding to the supposition that trucking companies classify the drivers as contract workers in order to avoid providing benefits.

Cauley, who drives for C&K Trucking, said that with the truckers' out-of-pocket expenses, they work for pennies on the dollar. She said that firms treat the drivers as employees and that they should be classified as such, with the ability to earn a little more and have at least some benefits of employees, such as access to health care insurance.
