FedEx takes on overnight computer repair

Shipping giant FedEx is moving into the field of computer repair – overnight computer repair, naturally.

Wednesday the company began contacting big corporations about their new overnight computer repair services. Its TechConnect service uses the repair expertise of small computer firm Getac, a manufacturer of "rugged" computers for the military, law enforcement and utility workers. FedEx plans to expand to other companies that can handle computer repairs.

"We found there was a high level of dissatisfaction in the marketplace," says Tod Taylor, a manager at FedEx's TechConnect unit to USA Today. "What we offer is unparalleled turnaround time." He said FedEx has been fixing its own gear for years, and it was a natural extension to use the same unit to fix outside PCs.

The shipping company hopes to eventually expand its overnight repair service to small businesses and then consumers, especially those who drop in daily to the one of the 1900 FedEx locations worldwide.
