Cargotec to open "global competence center" for container terminal development

Port equipment supplier Cargotec announced it is going to open a "global competence center" for container terminal development in Singapore.

The company said in a statement that the center's opening "will further strengthen [Cargotec's] ability to provide total solutions for its container terminal customers in the whole Asia-Pacific region."

"Singapore is one of the world's largest ports and it offers a unique view to customer trends, requirements and future needs for research, development and engineering purposes," said Mikael Mäkinen, president and CEO at Cargotec.

Cargotec said it has had a presence in Singapore for over 30 years and presently employs approximately 450 people there.

"The Asia-Pacific region has been identified as one of the company's growth areas accounting for 40 percent of the total sales in 2010" the company said.

Cargotec said its production locations in Asia are in China, India, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.
