Are you ready for "Cargo-Cycles?" The EU might be

If you've been to one of China's metropolitan centers, you've no doubt witnessed bicycles utilized for every conceivable type of transport beyond simply riding from one place to another.

The European Union is now looking at the China model having recently convened its "CYCLE Logistics" meeting in Copenhagen with the goal of saving 465,000 gallons of fuel and combining 10,000 intermodal trips with bicycles and tricycles by 2014.

"All modern, sustainable companies and cities will incorporate delivery of goods by bikes in their logistic systems," said Dr. Bernhard Ensink, Secretary General of the European Cyclists' Federation, the umbrella organization to the CYCLE Logistics program.

The benefits being touted for peddling cargo by Europe's leading cycle group include the green image it portrays with lower emissions, lower logistics costs and getting to hard-to-reach locations.

In China, the bicycles account for about one fifth of modal transport.
