Port of Houston to purchase 4 electric cranes

The commissioners of the Port of Houston Authority approved the purchase of four dockside electric container cranes from Konecranes Finland Corporation, to be located at Barbours Cut Container Terminal's Wharf No. 1.

The equipment will be part of the renovation of Barbours Cut, which opened in 1977 as the Houston port's first container terminal. In addition to the cranes, the $700 million revamp will include new lights and dock improvements to accommodate larger ships calling at the Gulf port.

The PHA board also approved the expansion of Foreign Trade Zone 84, which is one of the largest in the U.S. according to a Congressional report, and to create a new sub zone. More than $5 billion worth of exports pass through FTZ 84 annually, the report said.
