Ports America wins PMA safety awards

Jersey City-based terminal operator Ports America announced it won a group of awards at the Pacific Maritime Association’s recent 63rd Safety Awards Banquet, the company announced.

Ports America’s safety awards included including first place for the Coast Award and first place for Local Area Award Group A Stevedore Operations at the ports of Los Angeles-Long Beach for the second year in a row.

Ports America said in a statement that its set a record in the Group A Stevedore category by winning 12 first-place Coast Awards in the past 14 years “and an unprecedented 14 first-place Coast Awards during the past 17 years.”

Ports America announced it also won first place for the Pacific Northwest Group B Stevedore Operations, first place Coast Award, first place Local Area Awards, and the award for Greatest Reduction in Injury Rate at its Vancouver-Columbia River operation. In the Container Operations Group B category, Ports America in Washington-Puget Sound won the first place Local Area Award, Local Area Reduction in Injury Rate, and second place Coast Award.

Ports America at Port Hueneme was also awarded with the Most Improved Safety Record for companies with 50,000 man-hours or more and the Group B Stevedore Operations and the second place Coast and Local Area awards.

Ports America’s National Lines Bureau was also honored with a first place Coast Award for Lines Companies in Los Angeles-Long Beach and the One-Year Zero Incident Rate Coast Award, the company said.
