Three new quay cranes delivered to London Gateway port

Three giant quay cranes were delivered to the new deep-sea London Gateway port in the Thames Estuary in the U.K., at a site near Stanford le-Hope in Essex.

The quay cranes, taller than the London Eye, weigh 1,848 tons each and stand 138 meters high.

"The size of the cranes future-proofs the port, allowing London Gateway to handle the next generation of ultra large container ships," said London Gateway operations director Tim Halhead.

The cranes will be used to load and unload cargo from some of the world's largest container ships at the London Gateway port, which is scheduled to open in late 2013.

When the port is operational, owner DP World says it could provide up to 36,000 new jobs for the region.
