Crowley christens largest, fastest ATB

Crowley Maritime Corp. announced the christening of what the Jacksonville-based transportation firm termed its largest, fastest articulated tug-barge in New Orleans.

The 674-foot-long Legacy/750-1 has up to 330,000-barrel-capacity with a 16,000 horsepower tug pulling the barge unit at speeds up to 15 knots, Crowley said in a statement.

The latest U.S. -flagged ATB is the first of three such vessels built to be operated by Crowley for Marathon Petroleum.

Anacortes, Wash.-based Dakota Creek Industries, built the tug unit and the barge was constructed by Pascagoula, Miss-based Halter Marine.

Once the last of the three vessels is delivered, Crowley says its total ATB fleet will stand at 17.
