NASSCO starts building new "eco-tanker"

General Dynamics NASSCO has announced that a second eco-tanker, the Magnolia State, is currently being built for American Petroleum Tankers at the company’s shipyard in San Diego, California.

The eco-tanker is the second of a five-ship contract between General Dynamics NASSCO and APT, and is due for delivery in the second quarter of 2016. Each of the 610-foot, 50,000-ton tankers will have a 330,000-barrel cargo capacity.

NASSCO reports the design of the five ships calls for each to incorporate a G-series MAN ME slow-speed main engine, as well as dual-fuel-capable auxiliary

engines. The ships will also have the ability to accommodate future installation of an LNG fuel-gas system and include the latest environmental protection features, including a ballast water treatment system.

The ships were designed with an "optimized hull form" from DSEC of South Korea, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.

The first ship in the series, the Lone Star State, is expected for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year, according to NASSCO.
