Maersk introduces remote container management

Maersk Line says its new development, remote container management (RCM), takes the transportation of perishable goods to the digital era. RCM turns a container into a digitally connected device that keeps track of where each container is across all links in the cold supply chain.

RCM uses a box known as the remote container device (RCD), two antennas and a mobile signal to turn a regular refrigerated container into a digitally connected device.

Maersk said RCM has been in the works for five years and went live in 2015. Now fully implemented in 270,000 Maersk Line refrigerated containers, RCM allows the shipping giant to track data such as the location, power status, temperature, humidity and ventilation settings in the container even while at sea.
