GE to supply dynamic positioning for Logitel vessel

GE's power conversion arm won a contract to supply of dynamic positioning for a vessel floating accommodation unit being built at Cosco Nantong Shipyard in China, according to a company statement.

GE said the ship is being for Logitel Offshore, a Singapore-based floating logistics and accommodation rig owner, which has an exclusive license agreement to use the Sevan Marine design within the floating accommodation market.

The complete project includes a C-Series Class 3 DP system and manual thruster control system.

Sevan Marine specializes in units with cylindrical hulls, but this is the first time that the Sevan design will be used as a cylindrical accommodation vessel, the statement said.

Sevan hulls are suitable for operation in water depths of more than 3,000 meters, and the units are designed to operate in extreme conditions.

GE's said its DP system for the new accommodation ship complies with DNV's DYNPOS-AUTRO notation, which means the DP system has a very high level of design redundancy, featuring, for example, an alternate backup control position in addition to the primary control position.

The accommodation unit is designed to remain under effective position control even after the most extreme single failures of equipment or the spaces where the equipment is located.

GE used a team of engineering and system specialists in China, Norway and the U.K. The control systems will be delivered by mid 2014.
