Great Lakes welcomes new class of oceangoing laker vessel

The Federal Satsuki docked at the Port of Cleveland Wednesday, carrying specialty steel from Europe and representing a new class of oceangoing lakers.

The $25-million vessel is in a new class of "salties," or oceangoing lakers, commissioned by the Fednav Group of Montreal, the largest global shipping company on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Fednav is investing in seaway-size ships, expecting to see states like Ohio hike their exports.

The Satsuki is as approximately as long as two football fields. It is narrow enough, at 78-feet-wide, to negotiate the seaway locks loaded with 25,000 to 30,000 tons of cargo.

Port and St. Lawrence Seaway officials were on hand to greet Fednav executives and captain and crew at a ceremony on board the Satsuki.
