JAXPORT receives grant to reduce crane diesel emissions

The Jacksonville Port Authority announced it plans to further reduce crane diesel emissions at their Talleyrand and Blount Island Marine Terminals, using the installation of clean air catalysts at the port. A grant partnership with the state to fund the effort was approved Tuesday by port's board of directors.

Awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the grant will provide funds for the port to install diesel oxidation catalysts on port cranes and equipment, reducing emissions by 10 tons per year, the port says.

Once installed, the EPA has calculated in the first year of use, the DOCs will reduce pollutants significantly, including a 20 percent decrease in particulate matter, a 50 percent reduction in hydrocarbons, and 30 percent less carbon monoxide.

"We see the value in going above and beyond to reduce our impact while increasing employment and growing our economic value to North Florida, "said JAXPORT James Citrano, chairman of the board of directors.

The installation of the DOCs will be complete by mid-2013, the port said.
