JAXPORT moves multimillion-dollar heavy-lift cargo

The Port of Jacksonville has moved three multimillion-dollar helicopters and 10 ambulances through its Blount Island heavy-lift and project cargo berth.

Boasting one of the highest weight-bearing capacity docks in the U.S., JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal has a 1,800 pounds-per-square foot load capacity with rail capability up to 78 kips, or 1,000-pound force, per axle for heavy cargo.

The refurbished helicopters weighed as much as 10,000 pounds each, were 55 feet in length and

were valued at $35 million to $40 million each.

Stevedore Portus undertook the specialist lift and lashing of the units onto the U.S.-flagged Ocean Freedom, operated by Intermarine.

The helicopters and ambulances were being shipped to northern Africa through the U.S. government’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.

JAXPORT claims the highest and widest cargo clearance available for port access by rail on CSX’s national system, at 20 feet high and 13 feet wide.
