China Shipping Container Lines to receive world’s largest container vessel

China Shipping Container Lines is about to receive the first of five 19,100-TEU vessels later this month, which is the largest container ship in the world.

Measuring 400 meters long and 58.6 meters wide, with a depth of 30.5 meters, the planet’s largest containership will sail the Asia-Europe trade route.

The CSCL Globe will feature a 77,200 bhp electronically controlled main engine that will improve fuel efficiency by automatically controlling fuel consumption according to the ship’s speed and existing sea conditions. The vessel should burn 20 percent less fuel per TEU compared to container ships of half its maximum capacity.

CSCL initially ordered five 18,400 TEU vessels in May 2013, reportedly costing around $700 million, but subsequently upgraded its order to handle 700 more containers.

The ship was christened the CSCL Globe at a naming ceremony at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea, named by He Li Jun, the wife of Xu Li Rong, chairman of parent company China Shipping Group.
