Amazon Overseas deploys in China
Amazon China has officially launched the "Amazon Overseas" (translation) section of its site.
Amazon Overseas lets Amazon China customers browse stock from the U.S. Amazon store with a Chinese user interface. Currently, that means limited access. Products available on Amazon Overseas include only a few categories: baby and kids’ products, toys, clothing, shoes, sports equipment, beauty products, and health products.
These categories were chosen mainly due to the perception of Chinese parents that global products are safer. The Chinese press has raised questions about the safety of everything from domestic baby formula to children’s toys in recent years, and many parents therefore try to avoid domestic goods.
Amazon China said that Amazon Overseas would likely expand in the future, with merchandise from Amazon’s German, Spanish, French, and Italian stores added at a future date.
Although Amazon Overseas is meant to serve China-based customers, it may also be a boon to members of the Chinese community worldwide that would like to buy products from Amazon but would prefer to shop in Chinese.
