Great Lakes Shipyard scores $5M order for 2 tugs

Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland has received a $5 million contract from the New York Power Authority to build two tugboats for the authority’s Niagara River ice boom operations in Buffalo, the shipyard said in a press release.

The new tugs will replace existing vessels in the authority’s fleet, used for the installation, removal and maintenance of the Lake Erie Ice Boom and other marine construction projects.

Delivery of the first tug is scheduled for September 2015, Great Lakes Shipyard said in a news release.

Great Lakes Shipyard, an affiliate of Great Lakes Towing Co., said the tug construction contract is the company’s second major order from the New York Power Authority. In 2010, Great Lakes Shipyard built the agency’s ice boom operations barge, including the supply and installation of an 80-ton, pedestal-mounted lattice boom crane.

The tugs "will be specially reinforced with heavy stems and shell reinforcement for operations in seasonal ice," the statement said. The design of the conventional drive tugs includes elevated pilothouses for improved visibility when maneuvering.
