COSCO’s Piraeus Container Terminal orders 9 Kalmar cranes
Piraeus Container Terminal in Greece has ordered nine Kalmar all-electric rubber-tired gantry cranes, four of them the world’s widest, to boost port capacity and cut costs, according to Cargotec. Delivery is scheduled for 2015.
"We currently operate Kalmar RTGs, straddle carriers, reachstackers, forklift trucks, empty container handlers and terminal tractors," said Li Jianchun, deputy general manager of PCT, which is owned by COSCO Pacific. "The latest Kalmar E-One2 Zero Emission RTGs go beyond regular stacking capacity, with four of the units 10+1 wide and five 9+1 wide, which will help us maximize space utilization in the container yard."
The cranes will be fitted with Kalmar’s SmartRail automatic gantry steering system for safer operation around the yard, and will also reduce carbon emissions and lower costs of ownership. The order follows the delivery of 12 similar units to the terminal in 2013.
The E-One2 RTG has a safe working load (SWL) of 41-ton and meets all the latest environmental demands; the electric power system eliminates all emissions, engine noise and the need for hydraulic oils. It also helps the model achieve maintenance intervals of 1,000 hours.
