Liverpool 2 receives five "megamax" STS cranes

A big ship carrying five "megamax" ship-to-shore cranes from China arrived at the Liverpool 2 container terminal this week, according to a port statement.

The cranes are the most high profile element of the port’s $456 million investment in the U.K.’s centrally located container terminal.

The immense structures were built by China’s Zhenhua Heavy Industries, as part of a contract with Peel Ports worth more than $152 million. A total of

eight STS megamax cranes and 22 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes are being supplied to develop the Port of Liverpool.

Each crane measures 92 meters high — 132 meters high when the boom is raised, and weighs 1600 tons. The cranes have the ability to execute 30 moves per hour and will facilitate 1,500 moves in each tidal window. They will be capable of twin pick and outreach of 24 containers up to 10 high on deck, and working loads up to 85 tons.
