Long Beach Container Terminal deploys new Navis TOS

Long Beach Container Terminal has deployed the newest version of the Navis terminal operating system, N4, which will also be used at Middle Harbor, a major Port of Long Beach project that will combine multiple shipping terminals into a single facility.

Long Beach Container Terminal is a subsidiary of Orient Overseas Container Line, which signed a $4.6 billion, 40-year lease to run Middle Harbor in June 2012.

Middle Harbor is a 342-acre port expansion project that will support some 14,000 jobs. The first phase of the project is set to be completed in spring 2015, with final completion expected in 2019.

For now, the new software helps Long Beach Container Terminal manage operations at Pier F, a 102-acre terminal where seven cargo-moving cranes are in place.

The N4 system is designed to help staff manage the full range of issues it takes to run a shipping terminal, including the unloading of cargo, making sure shipping containers are properly prepared for import or export, or keeping containers bearing food separated from those placed near those that contain hazardous materials.

Navis' operating system went online in late May, said Andy Barrons, Navis' chief marketing officer.
