Port of Baltimore celebrates port expansion, opening of four cranes

The Port of Baltimore will bring in the new age of VLCCs in a celebration on October 30, opening four new post-Panamax cranes, each 40-stories high, for operation at the Port's Seagirt Terminal. The port is two years ahead of schedule in readying the terminal, which will receive the supersized container ships after the widening of the Panama Canal is completed in late 2014.

Government officials including Gov. Martin O'Malley, Sen. Ben Cardin, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, and
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will be on hand for the port event.

Once operational, the cranes represent the completion of the $105 million development at the port, and the fact that Baltimore is one of only two East Coast ports currently available to accommodate supersize container ships.
