Wärtsilä to provide gas-handling systems for 6 large ethane carriers
Wärtsilä, a Finnish firm that manufactures power sources for the marine industry, will supply gas-handling systems for six large ethane carriers (VLEC) being constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries for India’s Reliance Group, according to a company statement.
The 87,000m³ capacity vessels are being built at SHI's yard in South Korea, and will cost $723 million, according to a Samsung regulatory filing. These ships, the biggest ethane carriers ever built, will carry ethane from U.S. shale gas to India to be processed for making plastic, the statement said.
"This is a valuable order," says Timo Koponen, vice president of flow and gas solutions at Wärtsilä Ship Power. "These state-of-the-art ethane carriers require state-of-the-art gas handling systems. Our technology and know-how in this field uniquely positions us to offer the most appropriate solutions for VLEC's, which is an application that is rapidly expanding."
The company said it would deliver a cargo-handling package, including the process and arrangement engineering, the deck tank, cargo handling equipment and a re-liquefaction plant to deal with C-ethane from U.S. shale gas.
Delivery of the vessels will begin at the end of 2016 and be complete by early 2017, the statement said.
