Singapore center to research the sustainable flow of trade
The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) made a deal with Fujitsu and Singapore Management University to invest a total of $54 million in a center to develop sustainable urban solutions for trade-related projects and more.
The Urban Computing and Engineering Centre of Excellence currently aims to develop sustainable solutions for two projects—one to improve port operations by managing cargo congestion and one that addresses crowd management.
Under the arrangement, research will be conducted across all three organizations, with Singapore acting as a testing ground for solutions. A*STAR will contribute data visualization and analytic capabilities, and SMU will supply expertise in behavioral economics and computational social science. Fujitsu will leverage its computing to contribute to the center's research themes.
The collaboration "pushes the leading edge of public-private partnerships to solve major urban challenges confronting Singapore and many other modern cities today," according to Dr. Raj Thampuran, A*STAR's managing director.
