New technology would feed power from electric vehicles back into grid
A new technology developed by University of Delaware and NRG Energy would feed power back into the grid during peak periods of usage and potentially put a few bucks back in the pockets of electric vehicle owners.
The technological advance would be a response to the concern expressed by many over the burgeoning electric vehicle industry that electric grids would be drained by heavy volumes of overnight charging.
A new platform called eV2g was initially developed at the University of Delaware and would allow electric vehicle owners to plug into NRG Energy’s eVgo charging network and sell power back into the grid during peak usage periods.
“Working in partnership with the University of Delaware, eV2g technology will for the first time offer a true-way interface between EVs and the electric grid, resulting in cost saving to EV fleet operators and eventually other EV owners and consumers, and cleaner and more reliable electricity for everybody. It’s one more way EV owners can commit to a sustainable future and get paid for it at the same time," said Denise Wilson, president of NRG’s Alternative Energy Services.
