New FAA rules will let passengers power up during takeoff and landing

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to finally remove the mandate that electronic devices be turned off and stowed during the takeoff and landing phases of commercial flights.

An FAA advisory panel is expected to advocate pulling back these electronic restrictions in a meeting this week, according to The New York Times. The recommendation is expected to be passed along to the full FAA later in the month, with implementation planned for sometime in 2014.

The new rules will likely let passengers read an e-book, or continue a game, but it will not permit mobile phone calls, in-flight texting, or any mobile data use that would require connection with ground-based towers.
