Cargo ship becomes part of artificial reef (video)
The Kinta S. was sunk off the coast of Texas to transform into a new home for sea life in the Gulf of Mexico off Mustang Island.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department led the project to sink the 40-year-old ship. After slipping below the surface, the retired freighter sank 75 feet to become part of a 160-acre artificial reef, providing a habitat for sea life and a recreational site for divers.
The freighter is the latest edition to the Corpus Christi Nearshore Reef, which spans over 169 feet and consists of several thousand tons of concrete culverts and 470 concrete pyramids. The feature was first built in 2013, providing a home for a diverse range of marine species.
