Manatee port welcomes new mobile harbor crane

The Manatee County Port Authority hosted a crane dedication ceremony at Port Manatee Tuesday morning to commemorate the purchase of the port’s second mobile harbor container crane. A partnership between the MCPA and Logistec USA Inc. acquired the new crane from Gottwald Port Technology which is based in Dusseldorf Germany. The new crane cost approximately $4 million.

The second crane is similar to the first crane purchased by Port Manatee in December 2007, which at that time was the first ever Mobile Harbor Crane in the port’s 37-year history. The new Gottwald HMK 6407 has the additional benefits of higher hoisting speeds and a more efficient, environmentally compatible diesel-electric drive system.

The new HMK 6407 weighs approximately 460 tons and can lift the equivalent of two 737 jet airplanes. It has a 1,200 horsepower engine with 28 wheels for travel and its total height with an elevated boom is a maximum 257 feet. The combination of the port’s two cranes have the ability to lift 165 tons of cargo.

Bob Histon, General Manager of Gottwald Port Technology said, “Two or more cranes in a port provide momentum for jobs and growth.”
