Savi unveils portable tracking unit

Savi Technology announced the release of what the company refers to as a “first-of-its-kind technology” – a device that switches from satellite or terrestrial wireless systems to monitor the location and condition of shipments anywhere, anytime in the world.

The Portable In-Transit Tracking Unit (PITU) is a device about the size of a digital video recorder, and connects communications among Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) devices, GPS location and SatCom systems, global cellular networks and sensors that detect environmental and security changes, Savi said in a release.

Savi said the first PITU systems were acquired for NATO defense forces in Afghanistan.
