Semi-submersible gives dredger a ride to Singapore

In a massive operation, Zhen Hua 15, a semi-submersible heavy lift vessel, picked up the CSD Ganga, a 2,700-ton dredger, before heading to Singapore.

No machinery was used in the operation because the Ganga is too heavy for any crane to move and the 250-meter-long, 46,671-ton Zhen Hua is a semi-submersible vessel that can be lowered and its midsection opened to receive a huge load like the Ganga.

The loading of the dredge, specially arranged by Chennai Port officials, was a high precision dry tow exercise took eight hours and was executed by a team of professionals of various nationalities.

"This was a specialized operation because cranes cannot lift such heavy weights," a senior port official said. "Chennai was chosen as it has deep water in the harbor. There are two ways in which a mother vessel can move such bulky cargo. One is by towing and the other is by sailing on its own. The Zhen Hua is capable of sailing on its own."

Coordinated by retired captain Ilan Cheran, the operation involved Zhen Hua lowering into the water, taking on its cargo, and surfacing to normal level by de-ballasting its watertight pontoons.
