DNV demos hydrogen fuel cells as clean alternative for shipping industry

Hydrogen fuel cells, which produce high amounts of energy without pollutants, could be an inexpensive, clean energy alternative for the shipping industry of the future.

DNV Research and Innovation is part of the FellowSHIP fuel cell industry project that is promoting a shift to hydrogen cells in shipping. As a part of the project, DNV installed a 330-kilowatt fuel cell energy system that ran for more than 7,000 hours aboard the Viking Lady, an offshore supply vessel. The demonstration was the first time a fuel cell system this large has been successfully installed and operated on a commercial ship.
