Voyager I first ship to reach interstellar space
NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft, which left Earth in 1977, has officially entered interstellar space and is now more than 11 billion miles from our sun, nearly 130 times farther away than our planet. NASA scientists announced yesterday that the probe has reached a region of space that is outside our sun's electromagnetic influence.
Voyager completed its primary mission in 1980, after taking photos of Jupiter and Saturn, and has been flying away from the sun ever since.
