DNV GL approves LNG fuel system design for mega container ships

During the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg, ship and offshore classification society DNV GL bestowed Hyundai Heavy Industries and United Arab Shipping Company with an Approval in Principle that recognized the feasibility of their LNG fuel system design for the A14 and A18 series of container vessels, according to a DNV GL statement.

Tor Svensen, CEO of DNV GL Maritime, made the presentation to Oi Hyun Kim, CEO and COO of HHI’s Shipbuilding Division and Waleed Al Dawood, COO of United Arab Shipping Company.

"LNG as a ship fuel is a trend whose time has come," said Tor Svensen, CEO of DNV GL Maritime. "The benefits from an environmental and increasingly a business perspective are more apparent every day. The strong relationship and excellent cooperation between UASC, HHI and DNV GL has resulted in this milestone – the first AIP for LNG as fuel in a true mega box ship."

The series of eleven 14,500-TEU and six 18,800-TEU container ships are being built at HHI and HSHI for UASC and classed by DNV GL. These 17 ultra large container vessels will be converted to be LNG fuel-ready. DNV GL stated the "LNG Ready" AIP was prepared to indicate that the designs would provide a cost and time efficient conversion.
