Port of Miami dredging project to go out to bid

The Port of Miami this week signed a construction agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that will allow the "Deep Dredge" project to go out for bid. The Corps will manage the project, slotted for completion in 2015. The port will deepen its waterways up to 52 feet to accommodate post-Panamax-sized vessels.

"The project agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the final step prior to advertising for the construction contract," said Bill Johnson, director of the Miami port in a statement "We are on schedule to complete the Deep Dredge at the same time the expanded Panama Canal opens."

Johnson said that the Port of Miami will be the only U.S. Port south of Norfolk, Virginia to be at the minus 50 foot depth by the time the newly widened canal opens.
