Port of Los Angeles rewires for alternative power

The Port of Los Angles announced it has awarded a contract to Dynalectric to install alternative maritime power (AMP) and crane cable at Terminal Island.

Dynaelectric will install the underground electrical distribution, medium voltage switchgear and associated work for 15 outlets (6.6KV) at the port, according to its parent company, EMCOR.

Los Angeles is the first port to implement AMP for container ships. Rather than running dirty diesel while docked, AMP-powered ships plug in to an electrical outlet at the berth, reducing emissions significantly. AMP, also known as "cold ironing," has been used previously for cruise ships in Alaska and naval vessels.
