TOTE commended for planned fleet conversion to LNG

Totem Ocean Trailer Express received a commendation from the Coalition for Responsible Transportation for the shipping line’s announcement that is converting its two ORCA class of trailer-container vessels to liquid natural gas.

“TOTE’s deployment of LNG ocean vessels is a truly extraordinary accomplishment,” said CRT Chairman Rick Gabrielson, who is also director of international transportation for retailer Target in a statement.

“CRT’s members have been at the forefront of emission reduction efforts in the supply chain, and have been pioneers in advancing the use of LNG technology in port trucks,” said Gabrielson.

TOTE claims the LNG conversion would the first of its kind in the world for vessels of the ORCA-class type.

The shipping line that operates between Tacoma, Wash. and Anchorage, Alaska said the LNG-fueled vessels would “exceed the sulfur reduction goals of ECA by 95 percent,” and “achieve significant emissions reductions in all other categories of emissions: particulate matter, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide; making these ships among the cleanest in the world.”

“The expansion of LNG technology to ocean vessels is truly a game-changer from an emission reduction perspective,” said Target’s Garbrielson.
