Federal-level CIOs to get more power

The chief information officers of U.S. federal agencies will be granted more authority to manage their respective technology programs, including making budget cuts where necessary, according to the White House.

"CIOs will be held accountable for lowering operational costs, terminating and turning around troubled projects and delivering meaningful functionality at a faster rate while enhancing security of information systems," said Jack Lew, director of the Office of Management and Budget in a White House memo.

The revised responsibilities of Federal agency CIOs is the result of a restructured government information technology process, initially launched by former U.S. Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra that is being continued under his successor, Steven VanRoekel.

"These reforms were developed to remedy what had become routine in Washington: IT projects running over budget, falling behind schedule, or failing to deliver promised functionality, hampering agency missions and wasting taxpayer dollars," VanRoekel wrote in the memo.
