FedEx offers new cold chain packaging alternative

FedEx has launched a new packaging option for customers shipping items requiring temperature control that doesn't use gel packs or dry ice. The company said the new system is particularly useful for shipments by the healthcare industry.

The new "cold shipping" option can achieve a temperature of 4 degrees centigrade in less than five minutes. Built by NanoCool, the packaging can maintain an environment of between 2 and 8 degrees centigrade for up to 96 hours from the time its first activated.

"With our new cold shipping packaging option," said Carl Asmus, vice president of supply chain solutions and market development at FedEx Services, "FedEx customers who ship items that require a temperature controlled environment have peace of mind knowing their shipments are in the custodial control of the secure FedEx network."

FedEx said the new cool shipping packaging arrives ready for use, and is lighter and easier to dispose of than systems using gel packs.
