Trucks get hacked due to vulnerabilities in Globestar tracking system

Security flaws in Globestar satellite systems makes it easy for hackers to break into semi-trailers and make off with cargo.

These incidents are occurring in real life due to the vulnerabilities in the asset tracking system of valuable shipments that is being exploited by the hackers.

According to WIRED magazine, Colby Moore, a security researcher working with Synack, has discovered certain vulnerabilities in the asset
tracking systems of shipments and cargo. He
plans to discuss these at the Blackhat and DefCon

security conference to be held in Las Vegas.

Moore says asset-tracking systems developed by Globalstar and its subsidiaries have certain security flaws, which allow a hacker to trace cargo and disable the location tracking system that monitors it. Thus fooling the coordinates in such a way that the hijacked shipment would appear as if it is safely traveling the allocated route. The sensitive cargo could include materials such as gas, volatile chemicals, electronics, military supplies and even nuclear materials.
