Maersk Tukang tests BELCO marine scrubber

Maersk Group recently tested BELCO® marine scrubber technology aboard the Maersk Tukang, an 8,112-TEU container ship, according to Dupont subsidiary BELCO Technologies Corporation.

The scrubber was tested in May 2014 on a six-day voyage from the Port of Algeciras, Spain, to Genoa, Italy, with Maersk and BELCO staff on board, according to the company statement. An American Bureau of Shipping surveyor was also present to monitor the testing.

BELCO said the scrubber unit was created to clean sulfur dioxide and particulates from exhaust gas emissions from a 3.2 MW auxiliary engine. Open loop tests confirmed that it achieved 100 percent compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regulations for all air and wash-water emission criteria, according to the statement.

Closed loop testing is planned for early fall 2014.
