Panama Canal expansion may change global economy (photo spread)

At 11 stories deep, the newly enlarged concrete locks of the Panama Canal are an impressive sight. The expansion project has been underway since 2007, costing $5.25 billion, all in order to accommodate New Panamax ships, which can wedge into the new 1,400-foot-long locks.

According to research conducted jointly by The

Boston Consulting Group and C.H. Robinson, the expansion could be a game changer — possibly shifting as much as 10 percent of container traffic between East Asia and the U.S. from West Coast ports to East Coast ports by the year 2020.
