Peel Ports invests $9.4 million in automated gate system

Peel Ports has recently made a $9.4 million investment in an automated gate system, AutoGate, which will provide truckers with a faster, more streamlined service at the Port of Liverpool, according to a port statement. The investment adds to broad range of infrastructure developments underway at the port, it said, including the new deep-water container terminal slotted to open in 2015, Liverpool2.

Peel Ports said the AutoGate technology, supplied by Kalmar and APS Technology, will be installed later this year and is expected to increase the efficiency of terminal transactions.

"Installing a fully integrated automatic gate at Liverpool, along with the latest operating systems, will significantly advance operational efficiency and productivity for the port and for hauliers," said David Huck, port director for Peel Ports Liverpool, "reducing costs and having a positive environmental impact by minimizing waiting times."

As truckers enter the Port of Liverpool's container terminal, the new system will scan the vehicle, automatically capturing its details – including container information - through optical character recognition, according to the statement. It will also read the license plate of the vehicle and take a picture of the driver.

Drivers can then use a biometric ID card and answer a few simple questions on a touch screen monitor to access the terminal. The port says the AutoGate system will inform the crane or straddle carrier at the container terminal where the unloading or loading will take place, before directing the driver to the correct location.

The port says truckers will be able to load or unload cargo at the port without ever having to leave their vehicles, prior to entering the terminal.
