DHL launches logistics hub in North Asia

Freight giant DHL opened its largest Asian logistics center, the $175 million DHL Express North Asia Hub, on Thursday at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

"DHL Express North Asia Hub is a logistics milestone in DHL's Asia Pacific network and the culmination of a multi-hub and aviation strategy that cements our leadership position in terms of connections, convenience and cost-effectiveness,” said Dr. Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL in a statement.

DHL’s North Asia Hub, spanning 105,000 square yards, can handle up to 20,000 parcels and 20,000 documents per hour. Green features include solar-powered hot water, energy saving T5 lighting and a sorting system that goes into “sleep” mode when not in use.

By 2014, the company intends to invest another $132 million over the next two years for eight planes to service its popular Shanghai-to-North Asia and Europe-to-U.S. routes. The planes will be operated by a number of providers, including Polar Air, Aerologic and DHL Air UK.

Through these investments, DHL Express will continue to improve the existing connections between its four hubs in Asia - Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore – and global hubs in in Leipzig, Germany and Cincinnati, Ohio. It will also add new connectionsbetween the new Shanghai hub and the East Midlands in the U.K.
