Report: Forty percent of Americans access Web via cell phone

Mobile data usage is accelerating at a very fast pace, with 59% of cell phone owners in the U.S. accessing the Web through some wireless connection and 40% using cell phones, according to the latest tracking data from Pew Internet and American Life Project. Cell phone ownership has reached its saturation point in the U.S., but the behavior on those phones are evolving. Every category of mobile data use, from taking pictures and video to checking email and Web sites, is showing statistically significant growth from a similar survey fielded last year at this time.

Text messaging continues to grow, with 72% of phone users sending SMS, up from 66%. Similarly, picture-taking is on the rise as phone cameras improve. Of special note is the increase in video recording with a cell phone. Last year only 19% of cell phone owners had recorded video and this year that figure is up to 34%.
