APL to develop intermodal facility in Illinois

The world’s seventh largest container-shipping announced it has acquired 43 acres of land from CenterPoint Properties in the city of Joliet, Illinois, to develop an intermodal container terminal.

The facility is near the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, reportedly the largest inland port in the U.S.

“The purchase of this land is in line with APL’s long term strategic objectives. APL has a strong trans-continental intermodal network in the US and we want to build on that strength,” said APL Americas President Gene Seroka in a statement.

APL said its new container yard would be located close to the Union Pacific and BNSF Intermodal Rail Terminals, as well as numerous customer warehouse and distribution centers.

The facility is due for completion by December 2011, and the container yard will function as APL’s Chicago Global Gateway, serving customers in Chicago and the surrounding areas, the shipping line said.

The facility will feature automated gate technology, an equipment maintenance facility and reefer servicing capabilities, APL said.

The shipping firm said its regional operations team will be based at the new facility.
