MOL auto-carrier reduces carbon footprint with new tech

The Emerald Ace departed June 29 from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe shipyard, outfitted with innovative emissions-reducing technology and ready to service routes worldwide.

The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' auto-carrier has been fitted with a Panasonic hybrid electric power supply system, created to achieve zero emissions in harbor.

The green technology is a result of the joint research and development efforts of Panasonic, MOL and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. to design a car carrier using natural energy.

The technology, using HIT solar modules (160 KW) and lithium-ion batteries, reduces a ship's total CO2 emissions by supplementing the power generated by the ship's diesel power generator. The power generated by the HIT solar modules and stored in the lithium-ion batteries is used while the ship is at anchor, allowing the diesel power generator to be turned off.
